ALENTEJO

FREIXO POENTE s is located in the heart of Alentejo, one hour from Lisbon, 10 minutes from the nearest town Montemor-o-Novo, and circa 25 km from Évora the regions capital.

Alentejo is vast by European standards. It sweeps across the interior from the Atlantic to Spain. Its distinctive strength, climate, landscape, history and culture were crafted in equal measure by the Atlantic West and the Southern Mediterranean.

It is an immense natural space still free from the traces of industrialization and urbanization that marked the last century, with an enduring agro-silvo-pastoral system kwon as the Montado cultural landscape .

The golden wide plains , with protected oak species and stone pine forests, stretch to a pristine coastline of nature reserves, rice fields, salt ponds, and endless sand beaches where you can stroll for hours .

Perhaps it is one of the best-preserved regions of Europe: an extensive nature reserve where you can still live and feel Nature.

Miguel Torga (a Portuguese Poet) described it as the ”wilderness of an infinite dream”. With a still wild beauty and a unique light, the South and Alentejo are amongst the ”last utopias” on earth.

COMPORTA AND MELIDES

Comporta and Melides are about 50 minutes west of Montemor. We recommend driving to Alcácer do Sal on the scenic national road and, from there, head first to the coastal village of Comporta from which a pearl-like string of beaches lead south to Melides. Most of these shores have wonderful cafes in the dunes.

ÉVORA

Évora is just 20 minutes from FREIXO POENTE.

This city echoes Roman and other migrations - with well-preserved archaeological sites. The historic center, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to monuments such as the Temple of Diana and Évora Cathedral.

Évora is characterized by stunning architecture and picturesque streets.

Excellent restaurants, museums, galleries, and bookstores can be found here. Évora will be the European Capital of Culture in 2027.

MONSARAZ AND ALQUEVA LAKE

The stunning, tiny hilltop town of Monsaraz made from lime and schist overlooks the Alqueva lake, a vast and glorious blend of turquoise blue waters. Monsaraz is a charming medieval village known for its history and breathtaking views. Located on top of a hill, and with essentially only two streets, Monsaraz has splendid fortifications and a 16th century church. The village is close to the Alqueva dam, the largest water reservoir in Europe. Alqueva offers recreational activities such as boat trips and the special allure of riverside beaches. This combination of cultural heritage and natural beauty makes Monsaraz and Alqueva a special (unmissable) destination

Every season in Alentejo has its charm and feels distinctively different from the other. Lush green in winter. An abundance of wildflowers and poppies on the roadsides in spring.

In summer, the region is bleached pale golden. Fall is warm and languid - with opportunities to swim well into October/November.

The landscape is defined by olive and cork trees, umbrella pines, oleander and lavender, white-washed villages, and storks nesting in electricity poles. It is reminiscent of Tuscany but a little more muscular. Alentejo has an estimated 3.300 hours of sunshine per year, one of the highest rates in Europe. Winters are typically mild Summers are hot and dry.

Average temperatures during winter (December to March) are around 15º Celsius. During summer (June to September), the average temperature is approximately 28º Celsius. Spring and Fall seasons present similar conditions with an average temperature around 22ºCelsius.
